
Eric M. Gayan Partner
Eric Gayan received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Youngstown State University and his Juris Doctorate degree (cum laude) from Capital University. Eric is admitted to practice law in Ohio, before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the United States District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Ohio, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
Prior to joining Standley Law Group LLP, Eric spent one year as a plastics engineer and then seven years as a mechanical/project engineer for a major automobile manufacturer, where he was responsible for the design, construction and integration of a wide variety of automated and robotic machinery and work cells. Eric also has considerable practical experience in plastic injection and compression molding, as well as various die technologies. Eric's real world engineering experience is a significant benefit in comprehending inventions across a wide variety of technologies.
Eric's practice is directed to the preparation and prosecution of domestic and international patent applications involving various business methods and inventions in the mechanical, electromechanical, medical, and electrical and electronic arts. Eric has extensive experience with industrial machinery and processes and has considerable knowledge of various medical devices, including advanced prosthetics. He also has significant experience in currently emerging environmental-based technologies, such as groundwater remediation, water testing and purification, the treatment and capture of airborne emissions, power plant optimization, and alternative electric power generation and electrical energy storage.
Eric has counseled a wide variety of U.S. and foreign clients, from individual inventors and start-ups, to Fortune and Global 100 corporations. Eric's counsel has included regular onsite work, as well as assistance with the development, training and support of client intellectual property committees. Exemplary clients include large automotive companies, major utilities, environmental remediation firms, and manufacturers of medical devices, metal processing machinery, hand and power tools, plastic components, weighing and measuring equipment, and laboratory analytical instruments.
Eric has managed numerous U.S. patent reexamination actions and has appeared before the European Patent Office (EPO) in Munich with respect to European opposition proceedings. He also regularly prepares patentability, infringement, validity, and design around opinions. Eric's practice further includes litigation management and support, the preparation and prosecution of domestic trademarks and copyrights, as well as the preparation of agreements relating to the licensing, acquisition and development of various intellectual property rights.
